Alaska Class Vessels

State-of-the-Art Tank Ships

ATC is currently operating four 195k dwt "super redundant" double-hull tankers that were built at National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (Nassco) in San Diego. These ships were christened the Alaskan Frontier, the Alaskan Explorer and the Alaskan Navigator, and the Alaskan Legend. These state-of-the-art tankers represented a capital investment in excess of $1 billion.

Features:

  • Double-hull oil tankers

  • 1.3 million barrel capacity

  • Twin diesel-electric power systems in twin engine rooms (causing reduced air emissions)

  • Twin propellers and twin rudders

  • Propeller shafts lubricated with seawater instead of lubricating oil to prevent accidental oil leaks

  • Cargo piping installed in cargo tank rather than on deck, to reduce risk of small spills
